Sustainability
Our Mission
Berraco del Madidi is committed to environmental, cultural and economic sustainability. From its inception, Berraco has been a low-impact business and we continue to remain true to our sustainable mission.
In 2011, Berraco del Madidi was proud to be one of the eight operators to earn Green Action certification, indicating our compliance with best practices in sustainable tourism. In order to remain compliant, we require our employees and guests to abide by the codes of conduct below. The codes help us minimize environmental impacts, satisfy consumer needs, and improve our business productivity.

Energy At the EcoCamp, we limit our carbon footprint by being energy conscious. We run our generator for a maximum of three hours per day, providing us just enough energy to prepare meals and light the dining area.
At nightfall, we use candlelight to supplement energy-efficient bulbs in the dining room and ask our guests to bring flashlights for safety on the main footpaths, cabanas, and bathrooms. We do not currently offer hot showers. |
Water & Waste The stream running adjacent to the camp allows us to collect and store natural shower and sink water. We ensure that our guests are provided safe drinking water, bottled in Rurrenabaque.
We compost organic waste on-site to fertilize our jungle garden. Here we grow native fruits and vegetables such as papaya, peppers and onions. We collect inorganic waste and carry it back to Rurrenabaque, where the plastic bottles are recycled. |
Wildlife Berraco makes every effort to minimize our impact on the environment. The primary rainforest surrounding the EcoCamp is a sensitive ecological area that has seen limited human presence throughout it's history. We wish to keep it as pristine as possible to protect the tremendous diversity of life.
Trails are used intermittently and rotated. We adhere to a strict code of conduct for the treatment of wildlife as well. Our staff and guests do not touch the animals and aim to reduce interference in their habitat. |
Cultural Sustainability It is important for us to support the San Jose de Uchupiamonas community to ensure that our way of life continues to flourish. Berraco offers local employment opportunities and works to protect our Bolivian Amazon rainforest. We offer cultural community visits in exchange for educational and medical supplies. During this activity, our guests have the chance to explore local crafts, cuisine and lore in exchange for their contribution to the health and education of the indigenous community.
